Naugatuck River Map

A map of the heavily polluted Naugatuck River watershed commissioned for a artists book.

This map of the Naugatuck River was commissioned by photographer Marion Belanger for inclusion in her 2014 photo book RIVER, itself commissioned by Artspace in New Haven, Connecticut for the exhibition CT (un) Bound.  The book includes photographs of the heavily disturbed Naugatuck River, formerly home to Connecticut’s brass industry, once heavily polluted.  The map depicts the Naugatuck River Watershed, along with urban and suburban areas, preserved open space, transportation routes, and dams that were built to provide power to earliest mills.  Marginalia on the map tells the story of pollution in the river and the return of marine life after the removal of many of the dams. 2014.
